I think in recent versions of mingw this is no longer
the case.  

Imho the jni/java issue is not a platform issue but an
OSX issue. My java applications run quite well with
IBM jdk1.4.1 on Linux for PPC.  Running kawa on OSX
10.1/jdk1.3 reboots the machine immediately, in 10.3
the apple JIT crashes after one hour.

Hopefully this and the compatibility with Sun's java
will improve with 10.4.  Until then I think it's not
worth thinking about gcj and OSX java compatibility.
