This was checked in after I had noticed this failure.

This is not the cause.

Sorry, but very likely this is responsible.

What I have found is that we have been producing bad
bytecode for some time now, but that gij was able to
throw a VerifyError.

But now gij is hanging while throwing this exception...

Unfortunately, I have to rush home now and can't continue
this investigation. :-(

Can you (or someone else) please continue it? 

Note that you'll have to revert Geoff's changes
(otherwise you'll simply get "Aborted") for PR15813 and
clean $BUILD/i686-pc-linux-gnu/libjava completely before
rebuilding libjava.
