Ecos and garbage collection

I am having a problem building building the garbage collector for Ecos.
The target is arm-elf, and I am passing --with-ecos to configure to set
up the build. Everything compiles correctly, but when it gets to
linking, libtool complains about a file which doesn't exist called
'ecos.lo'. This file is mentioned in the makefile in several place,
though there is no rule to make it, nor does there seem to be any
related source code. Can anyone tell me where to get this file? I am
using gcc-3.3.4, and I cannot upgrade as the application that I am
trying to build is tied to that version.
