I see few similarities:
- same license (GNU GPL)
- originally started by the same author (Richard Stallman)
- some of the most important projects (well, GCJ not but GCC and GCJ is
part of it) of the FSF and their GNU system
- both rather (dunno about emacs) platform-independent
- err, well, ran out of similarities
