I expected to be able to have this work:

gcj -c log4j.jar 

A small note on what actually was made to work or how it was done would go a long way.

Well it does, I do not know who claims that it compiles. It depends on
what you understand on 'compiles'. A few weeks ago I was working on
making Tomcat run native. 

It required me to get Log4J to compile. The point is that Tomcat itself
is quite configurable, just like Log4J. So there are a lot things I
decided I just scrapped, because I didn't needed it at the moment. 

I got a version compiled, where several things were left out, because I
didn't needed them, But someting came up while I was working on it, so I
didn't get to test everything.
