I found out how to stop jc1.exe from allocating 1.7GB.

I'm a bit puzzled that Danny saw this error at the same time as
me.

Q: do I interpret the GCJ manual correctly that specifying --classpath
will stop GCJ from picking up using the CLASSPATH environment variable?

#GRUDGE ON:

I don't like programs that install themselves all over the
harddrive. I don't like the concept of global configuration
that applications modify during install.

The reason is that they can screw things up.

#GRUDGE OFF:

After being mystified about jc1.exe trying to allocate 1.7GB
(and failing), I went back to hello world and it failed too.
However, it offered a much more useful error message.

C:\thisiscool-gcc\examples\HelloWorld>\thisiscool-gcc\gcc-3.3\bin\gcj
--main=Hel
loWorld HelloWorld.java
HelloWorld.java:0: error: malformed .zip archive in CLASSPATH:
