Yeah. We can't use a newer automake until we can use a newer
autoconf. And this can't happen yet due to some oddities involving
cross compilation (as I understand it).
At the gcc conference (or so I hear, not having attended) people
agreed to upgrade to the new auto*. And there's some discussion of
this taking place on the gcc list. So this should happen in the
not-too-distant future.
