Where to get automake and/or autoconf versions required to "rebuild" libjava?

I think that I read somewhere that "special" versions of automake (and 
perhaps autoconf) are required to rebuild Makefile.in in libjava.  But 
now I cannot find where I read it.

I have tried what claims to be automake version 1.4, but it produces 
many errors like this one:

automake: Makefile.am: not supported: source file 
`gnu/java/rmi/registry/RegistryImpl_Stub.java' is in subdirectory

Where do I obtain the needed versions of automake?
