Good question.  I don't know -- it'll depend on what comes out of that.

If it's too complex, it's perfectly reasonable to use your original
patch on the branch and the new patch on the mainline.  I don't mind
ugly hacks on the branch; sometimes that's the best way to fix a
specific problem with minimal risk.  On the mainline, though, ugly
hacks confuse us for years to come.

I'm sorry not to have a definitive answer for you.
