GC failure w/ THREAD_LOCAL_ALLOC ?

Hmm, must be some other problem on alpha, because alpha does not use 
THREAD_LOCAL_ALLOC. My problem definately occurs only when 
THREAD_LOCAL_ALLOC is enabled.
