PR 1208

I have a patch for PR 1208 (formerly PR 154) that you approved a while
back.  I haven't yet checked it in.  Is this patch ok for the trunk or
just the branch?

I have some other approved-but-uncommitted patches, but some of those
I'm just going to put off since the things they fix aren't very
important.  However, this particular patch fixes a bytecode generation
bug, albeit in an ugly way.
