Can't build sparc-linux gcc-3.1 2001-12-19 java/lang/ThreadGroup.lo

I have an up to date Debian woody (test release)sparc sun4m sysetm with

binutils_2.11.92.0.12.3-3_sparc.deb
libc6_2.2.4-7_sparc.deb


that I'm trying to build gcc-3.1 (CVS Wed Dec 19 23:49:25 UTC 2001) on. 
It fails in the java parts like this:

 /tmp/ccoq2Nfo.s: Assembler messages:
/tmp/ccoq2Nfo.s:2598: Error: undefined symbol `.LL306' in operation
/tmp/ccoq2Nfo.s:2628: Error: undefined symbol `.LL306' in operation
make[3]: *** [java/lang/ThreadGroup.lo] Error 1

Any ideas?
