libgcj testsuite

I seem to get a lot of error reports running "make check" on libgcj even
though the tests compile fine when I do it by hand.

For example, I get:

FAIL: PR238 compilation from bytecode
XPASS: PR238 -O compilation from source
FAIL: PR238 -O compilation from bytecode

(amongst a whole lot of other failures) even though I'm sure that it
does compile fine.

Is this "normal", or, if not, any idea what I might be doing wrong?
