Compiler errors while parsing bytecode files.

Working with the verifier, I found that most compilers other than
javac "classic" generates much dead code.  This is even true for the
new official javac derived from gjc by Martin Odersky.  

I seem to remember that there was some discussion on this list a while
back, where it was found that gjc has some problems coping with dead
code.  So this may be the link.
