build probs w/libgcj: java-array.h not found

Can someone tell me what I have to do to get libgcj to build?
I've tried it before and gotten identical errors. So this time
the idea was to get the latest stuff and rebuild ... same probs:
it complains about "java-array.h" not being found.
What I did:
- get gcc 2.95.2
- configure --enable-threads=posix --enable shared
- make bootstrap
- make install
- update $PATH to use this new GCC
- get libgcj snapshot 1999-11-20
- configure --enable-threads=posix --enable-fast-character
Accurate build instructions are hard to find. The GCC docs still
say that the threads options only matter for objective C, and
don't mention GCJ. (And the README for that release doesn't get
the name of the "install" directory right, leading in circles...)
The README for the libgcj snapshot doesn't mention any need to
configure threads ... yet I've seen such info come up regularly
on this list.
So I guess I'd say accurate build instructions should be found
through the FAQ, as well as part of the distribution(s).
Note that neither /usr/local nor the gcc 2.95.2 tree nor the libgcj
snapshot tree have a "java-array.h" file. The string "java-array"
is in the 'gcjh' file and the 'gjavah.o' object.
This is sort of a frustrating excercise. I've _once_ gotten GCJ
to build (probaby 4 months ago now), but the Cygnus lists haven't
been amenable to my posting due to faulty ORBS information, else
I'd have posted this query quite some time back.
