c++ can't understand extern "Java".

As you discovered, you have to use the C++ compiler that comes with
egcs to compile libgcj.  The C++ compiler has some changes to make it

I don't know why your egcs doesn't have a C++ compiler.  Mine does.
Did you get egcs via cvs?  Or via snapshots?
