I thought egcs also had this problem.

I think the bug has to do with the multilibbing support not working
correctly when srcdir==builddir, but I haven't been very motivated to
really track it down and fix it (since, as Andrew says, everybody here
does srcdir!=builddir builds anyway).  If you, or anybody, wants to
come up with a patch, that would be great.
