I haven't seen the book, but I can guess. In the 80's, while a
Stanford graduate student, I worked for Knuth as a Research Assistant
for a couple of quarters. This was while he was working on the
new Weave-based Metafont. I had worked on the i68k code generator
for the Ucode-based Pascal compiler, and I had also worked with the
research V operating system. I managed to get Metafont working
on the Sun machines running V in time for a lab class using
Metafont.
I also found some bugs in Metafont - but dd not get any reward,
beyond my pay ...
I also have a credit in the LaTeX book ...
