I think I know what he means.  Gcc has something like 200 command-line
options.  It's difficult to keep them all in mind.  It's even
difficult to put them all into a user interface so that you don't have
to keep them all in mind.  In theory it is nice to be able to tweak
each part independently.  In practice I have to wonder how many people
actually do it.
