So it has been a little while since I sent this patch:

I still think it is a good idea, and would re-test it on the trunk.

This problem recently hit the gold linker, which was subsequently fixed 
so that it doesn't crash:

But that doesn't negate the fact that gcj is emitting defective 
.rodata.jutf8.* sections.
