I started Eclipse with and without the patch 3 times each.  The fastest
patched start-up was about 1/3rd faster than the fastest unpatched
start-up.  I find it hard to believe this, but that's what I found.
Note that I didn't make any special attempt to quiet my system before
doing this.

I'll file a bug for this, since I don't think I'll get to it soon.

This other improvement was more important since it eliminates garbage
creation.
