[patch] merge from java-gui-20050128-branch to trunk

hi,

by popular request I've prepared a large-ish patch which merges the work 
lingering on java-gui-20050128-branch to the gcc trunk, in preparation 
for the upcoming 4.0 branching. I am very apprehensive about this patch. 
if someone would be so kind as to give it a test drive, or even go so 
far as to commit it to trunk themselves under appropriate amounts of 
care and caution, I'd certainly appreciate it.

it seems to work for me, but trunk and I have failed to see eye to eye 
several times this year, and now is a bad time to be making mistakes.
