ah right. I've committed that now (along with a hunk correcting for 
non-ANSI comments which made it into some JNI code), and I've updated 
the patch on my people.redhat.com page. all tested again pre commit.

sure, any of these is possible. I'm open to suggestions. this whole 
"giant heavily-churning branch" situation is very new to me; I feel as 
though I've opened quite a can of worms.
