For code internal to our implementation, we can do whatever we think
makes the most sense.  In this case, if you want to implement it, go
ahead.  For java2d, as far as I'm concerned Graydon can pick whatever
approach he likes.  For the xlib peers, apply to Scott Gilbertson...
