I'm all in favor of fixing bugs in 3.3.1, but we have to temper that
against binary compatibility in the 3.3.x series.  Are all the classes
that would be changed by this "invisible" to well-behaved user code?

I assume the patch will be pretty big.  My criteria are that it
conforms to the above and that it be "low risk".  E.g., it would be
bad news if it caused build problems on some obscure architecture.
