C++98/C++11 ABI compatibility for gcc-4.7

I don't know, I see pretty extreme statements around, which lately (maybe because I'm getting older? ;) I do my best to avoid. In any case, 4.7.1 is already out, whatever we do as regards to rolling out a completely new std::string implementation doesn't seem suited for a .2 release. Just my vote.
