Thanks for the apology, but it should still be reported to bugzilla
not to this list.

Your example can be reduced to

struct XYZ { };

XYZ& f(XYZ& r) { return r; }

XYZ&
get_XYZ_data()
{
   XYZ result;
   return f(result);
}
