About symbol and label

hello, all. Now I am working on porting gcc to a new
RISC processor. There are to two concept confused me:
symbol and label. They are both important in
generating assemble. Like a variable name : int
g_iarray[10], 
and a function name:   int fun1(int i, int j)
and internal jump labels like L1, L2. which are labels
and  which are symbols. Thank you very much.
