Your test is flawed.

$ cat align.c
#include <stddef.h>
#include <stdio.h>

struct x {
  unsigned char a[1];
  double b;
};

int
main (void)
{
  printf ("%d\n", offsetof (struct x, b));
}
$ ./align
4

(long long has the same anomaly.)
