What does this mean?  In 32-bit linux gcc, as currently set up, double 
alignment may be disabled by setting -Os or by 
-mpreferred-stack-boundary, but otherwise it is the default.  The 64-bit 
int registers aren't available in 32-bit mode.  Are you proposing a 
64-bit mode with the same alignments as -Os sets in 32-bit mode?
