I'd just disregard my size numbers until I can figure out what I've
done wrong.

I did recently upgrade to the tip of 'next' branch of git, will go
back to my previous version.
I have set
[core]
legacyheaders = false
[repack]
usedeltabaseoffset = true
in my .gitconfig.
