again, where I use a 64-bit version of 4.1.0 on powerpc-apple- 
darwin8.5.0.  So it is (was?) possible to build a 64-bit version of  
4.1.0 on (at least one version of) darwin.

I would consider not being able to do so for 4.2 a regression.
