I built a gcc-4.0.3/binutils-2.16/glibc-2.3.6 cross toolchain yesterday
and this fixes the problem. I can't really use gcc-4, due to the
vintage of the kernel that I'm using. Does anyone have any ideas what
this bug is? Is there an open bug?
