GCC generating invalid assembly

Also note that -gcoff is not really tested or supported any more, 
especially
on elf targets.  I would not use it at all.  stabs or dwarf-2 is more
supported formats.  Dwarf-2 support is also in the current version of 
gcc
for cygwin.
