Yes, that's certainly right, and in fact that is an important function
of any logo (to kind of form a banner for the community :-) That's true
with a company logo also, so you are quite right, this is a general
important feature of a logo.

Well it really does not matter if they do or don't. A logo is not a
photograph or a representation of a reality. WHo cares what a GNU
really does or looks like, what we want is not something realistic,
but something stylized that appeals (I actually like the current logo
on this business
