3.4 bootstrap problem with sun cc

I'm seeing a wierd error in stage2 on sparc-sun-solaris2.9 when using
cc for stage1.  The error I get is:

 > /usr/ccs/bin/as: "/tmp/ccId750a.s", line 16716: error: constant value
 > must be between -4096 and 4095
 > make[2]: *** [loop.o] Error 1

When I use gcc for stage1, I don't get the error.  I also don't get
the error using a different version of Sun CC on another box.

The failing system runs solaris2.9 and has Sun C 5.5 2003/03/12 and
as: Sun WorkShop 6 update 2 Compiler Common 6.2 Solaris_9_CBE 2001/04/02

The working system runs solaris2.7 and has WorkShop Compilers 5.0
98/12/15 C 5.0 and as: WorkShop Compilers 5.0 03/07/30 Compiler Common
5.0 Patch 107058-02

Is it a bug in sun cc version 5.5?
Any help?
