Out of curiosity: why do you write below that "cvs update won't work"??

Ah..for some reason when I was trying to update via cvs it didn't work 
as expected and the build failed - I didn't understand why. So I asked 
the list (see http://gcc.gnu.org/ml/gcc/2004-03/msg01170.html ) and was 
told to use gcc_update instead. I'm fairly sure someone else with a 
better understanding of cvs and the build process would be able to get 
around the problem I was having.
