I would actually like to merge the main expansion changes from
tree-profiling.  I believe they are resonably stable now and works as
expected.
Yes, that's seems like a good idea if we're focusing on removing RTL passes.

It was actually past me why these were not accepted together with the 
other gimple-low changes -- did/do they cause any regression?

No please... there's so much code in integrate.c waiting for the old 
loop optimizer to go away.
