pthread on Linux

Hi,
I am using "Red Hat Linux 9.0" & "gcc 3.2" version. I
am trying to build static library out of c++ source
code.

Do I have to use -pthread option during C++ source
file compile time, for multithreaded library?

Does -pthread option should be used for linking the
multithread application?
