Intrinsic support without -sse2

Hello,
I want to be able to use SSE2 intrinsics (__m128i) without making
all the code generate SSE instructions when it detects it can
optimise it with SSE2 instructions.
I would like to have common CDEFS, but ensure that non CPU Feature
guarded code is pIII compliant, but the intrinsics still exist where
needed.
Put slightly differently I would like to have gcc target SSE class
hardware *except* where I explicitly indicate I want to use intrinsics.
Is this possible at all? -msse2 generates in some cases sse2
optimisations, but is required to use sse2 intrinsics.
I am using gcc-3.3.3.
Regards,
Matthew
