Yea, I went back and did more testing.  It's the call from the code
to muck around with the virtual operands, not the real operands.

I had both calls to propagate_value in my original patch.  I may have
lost the one in the vops code in my later test patch -- which would
explain why I couldn't trigger the failure earlier this afternoon.

Egad.  Now I know it's time to get away...
