    Yes, so there is no basis for claiming that it is critical. 

Nor that it isn't.

    If indeed -O2 -fno-strict-aliasing has got a lot worse with tree-ssa,
    that is another reason to delay using this version.

That was not what I was claiming.  My claim was that there would be a much
larger difference between -O2 and -O2 -fno-strict-aliasing in tree-ssa
than before.  I would not want try to guess how the two versions would
compare when both used with the latter option.
