Yes, that is a good idea.  Another idea that occured to me over the 
weekend is to have a debugging recog.  It would be nice if recog could 
tell us what it was doing.

Trying to match reg:SI for insns 177, 178, 179, 224, 225
Success.
Trying to match eq:SI for insn 177
Failure.
Trying to match ne:SI for insn 178
Success.

That would make it easier to find some kinds of bugs.
