i've just finished a successfully gcc testing & installation : 

gcc-3.3.3/config.guess:
i686-pc-linux-gnu

gcc -v:
Lecture des spicification ` partir de 
/usr/lib/gcc-lib/i686-pc-linux-gnu/3.3.3/specs
Configuri avec: ../gcc-3.3.3/configure --prefix=/usr
Modhle de thread: posix
version gcc 3.3.3

distribution:
Mandrake Linux release 9.0 (dolphin)

kernel:
Kernel 2.6.5
glibc:
2.2.5

only special thing to do :
change the link /lib/libgcc_s.so.1 from /lib/libgcc_s<oldgcc>.so to 
/usr/lib/libgcc_s.so
