In fact, it appears that even something as simple as "ls" on the
problem directory on the gcc.gnu.org machine will cause the process to
lock up leaving the process in a device-wait state.

The net result is the load is roughly 71 right now (though the machine is
responding better than it has all day -- as long as you avoid the problem
directory).
