I'm about to commit some fixes that hopefully will take care of this as 
a side effect.
If not, i'll need to find a platform I have access to that i can 
reproduce this bootstrap failure on. (I'm trying ppc64 now, then i'll 
try an x86_64-linux-gnu cross compiler)
