This is not g77 specific (whence the subject change, otherwise everyone 
on gcc@gcc.gnu.org assumes I'll solve it :-)

Try to find out why fix-header.c gets compiled by the stage2 compiler 
(or rather, isn't, because that compiler doesn't exist yet at 
fix-header-time ....)
