Someone mentioned at the BOF that autoconf 2.5x does this
automagically.  I suppose we don't want to reinvent the wheel if we're
converting to a new verison (and IIRC we are.)

Someone (Ben?) was taking notes.  We need to post them so we can call
for volunteers for the various tasks we came up with.
