emitting templates as 'T'? Changed from 3.2 to 3.3

The platform is Debian Unstable on a regular Intel PC:

~$ g++ -v

~$ ld -v
GNU ld version 2.14.90.0.2 20030515 Debian GNU/Linux


The problem does not always exist - a regular small template example creates
W symbols.
