gcc failed to bootstrap on RedHat 9

I'm terribly sorry and embarrassed. I don't think I really understood what 
the doc testing requirements meant ("make info" worked for me). I need to 
go back and understand what that means.

I checked in a band-aid that should hopefully fix this. I'll do a 
bootstrap right now, but my machine takes some 45 minutes, so if someone 
can confirm that it works or doesn't, please let me know.
